Your VA disability rating directly determines your monthly tax-free compensation, access to healthcare, home loan benefits, and dozens of state-level benefits. Most veterans underestimate both what they qualify for and what each percentage point is actually worth financially.
Disability compensation is tax-free. A $2,000/month VA disability payment is equivalent to roughly $2,600-$2,800 in taxable civilian income for most veterans. Factor this into your salary negotiations.

How the VA Calculates Combined Ratings
The VA does NOT add percentages together. They use "Whole Person" math. Start with 100% as your whole person. A 50% rating takes 50% of that whole person, leaving 50%. A 30% rating then takes 30% of the remaining 50% (15 points), bringing you to 65%. The VA rounds this to the nearest 10%, giving a combined rating of 70%.
Important: 70% combined rating is NOT the same as 70% pay. Use the VA's online combined ratings calculator at va.gov to see your exact combined rating before expecting a specific payment amount.

If your service-connected conditions prevent you from maintaining substantially gainful employment (earning above the federal poverty threshold), you may qualify for TDIU - which pays at the 100% rate even if your combined rating is lower.
Standard qualifying requirements: a single disability rated at 60%+, OR multiple disabilities with a combined rating of 70%+ with at least one rated at 40%+. Application is made through VA Form 21-8940. A VSO or VA-accredited claims agent can significantly improve your approval odds.
